On 9th June 2026, Dr Shantanu Braj Choubey, Faculty Convenor, CLLR, NUSRL delivered an insightful lecture during a training programme at the Indian Institute of Coal Management (IICM), Ranchi. The session provided participants with a comprehensive overview of India’s four Labour Codes: the Code on Wages, 2019; the Industrial Relations Code, 2020; the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020; and the Code on Social Security, 2020. He commenced the lecture by discussing the constitutional foundations of labour welfare, with particular emphasis on Article 38 of the Constitution of India and its relationship with the principles underlying labour welfare legislation such as the Minimum Wages Act and the Equal Remuneration Act. The session further examined key provisions of the Industrial Relations Code, 2020, including the definition of a worker, the applicability of labour laws, and the significance of employment contracts in contemporary industrial relations. Participants were also introduced to important aspects of trade unions, including their registration, recognition, rights, liabilities, and the statutory requirements governing their functioning.
The lecture enriched participants’ understanding of the evolving labour law framework in India and highlighted its practical implications for industrial relations and workplace governance.
