On 16 June 2026, Center for Labour Law and Research CLLR had the privilege of hosting Aamir Khan Sir, Head Legal Project, indianexpress.com. He conducted two insightful sessions, interspersed with an engaging question-and-answer interaction with the participants.

The first session primarily focused on the question, “What do editors look for in a script?”, while the second explored the methodology of reading judicial decisions and identifying their most relevant and newsworthy aspects. Both sessions were intensive, interactive, and highly enriching. Throughout the discussions, he adopted a skill-oriented approach, emphasizing the practical competencies required in the field of legal journalism, as well as in legal writing and article submissions.

In the first session, Sir introduced participants to the concept of the “inverted pyramid” structure and explained how content should be strategically organised in a news copy. He highlighted the importance of prioritizing key information, ensuring clarity and accessibility for readers, and avoiding common pitfalls in legal reporting. Particular emphasis was placed on not burying the lead, avoiding excessive legalese, and maintaining an appropriate word limit generally within the range of 1,200 to 1,400 words keeping in mind editorial constraints and reader engagement.

The session provided valuable insights into the qualitative and quantitative considerations that editors take into account while evaluating submissions. By drawing attention to both the substance and presentation of a story, he offered participants a practical understanding of the standards expected in contemporary legal journalism.
